Preface

This guide helps you plan an OpenAM deployment, including performing the following high-level tasks:

  • Choose OpenAM software features for your deployment. OpenAM offers a wide-variety of features to meet the needs of any deployment.

  • Plan any customizations or extensions that are absolutely required.

  • Gather information about the services that your OpenAM deployment uses, and define what those services must provide for your deployment.

  • Gather information about the resources that OpenAM protects as well as the consumers of your OpenAM deployment.

  • Reach agreement with partners concerning federation and other deployments where multiple actors share control.

  • Define your objectives in terms of service levels including availability and security for different services.

  • Determine performance requirements and testing procedures to assure performance requirements are met.

  • Specify logical and physical deployment topologies, including site and multiple data center deployments.

  • Plan the deployment process, including implementing training teams and partners, customization and hardening, and development of a proof-of-concept implementation. Other tasks include performing integration with client applications, integration with auditing tools, automation and continuous integration when necessary, running functional and non-functional testing, documenting procedures and tracking changes, acceptance in production, maintaining and supporting the solution in production, and planning for expansion and upgrade.

Who Should Use This Guide

This guide is written for access management architects and project managers who plan OpenAM software deployments within their organizations.

This guide focuses on the tasks that need to be completed for successful OpenAM deployment. It does not show how to accomplish each individual technical task, such as installation, configuration, and maintenance.

Before using this guide, you should have a firm grounding in software deployment, in access management, and in OpenAM software itself.
